The National Cancer Institute defines a cancer cluster as the occurrence of a greater than expected number of cancer cases among a group of people in a defined geographic area over a specific time period. This may mean several cases of a rare cancer, or an exceptionally large number of common diseases such as breast, prostate or lung cancer. The Michigan Cancer Surveillance Registry, together with your local health department and other state agencies, investigates cancer clusters.
